Who is Tyranny Allen?
A serial entrepreneur, branding strategist, gallery owner, and one of the most recognizable builders in Oakland. The nickname on the flyer isn't decoration — it's a job description.
A San Francisco native who made Oakland his kingdom, Tyranny Allen started his first business in his early twenties — a skate-apparel line called KickFlip — and never stopped. He has been a hip-hop artist, a painter, a gallery owner, and a serial entrepreneur, often all in the same week.
As founder of The Marketing Kings, he built a branding and marketing agency whose work has run through Oaklandish, Marshawn Lynch's Beast Mode, Shemar Moore, Goapele, and John Salley. He co-owns the Beast Mode Barbershop in Old Oakland with Lynch.
His anchor is Lucky's Barber Shop at Swan's Market, where he is the last original merchant still standing — and where he painted the window displays and murals for the market's 100th anniversary. Add Winky Dinky Dogs, Cookiebar Creamery, Torch Oakland, and the Tyranny Allen Gallery, which exists to show the work of artists of color.
Through all of it runs one throughline: using his own platform to build, fund, and champion Black-owned business in Oakland. On September 29th, the man who spends his life throwing the spotlight on everyone else finally gets it pointed back at him.
